So you've arrived in Japan and you miss your home streaming media service (Netflix, BBC iPlayer, etc), and most of these will not work with our of the box Japanese internet. Netflix region locks it's content, so it will not work unless you know a work around. You can access Netflix, without breaking any laws that I know of. There are two ways of accessing Netflix or Netflix like services:
1. You can pay for a VPN service that has a sever in the country video streaming has content locked its service Netflix->USA, Hulu->USA , BBC iPlayer->UK. This does work and actually is the only option for many, but it would only work on one device at a time, is more expensive than the other solution. If my second option does work here are a few VPN Services I have used: ProXPN.com, privateinternetaccess.com.
2. Without having to sacrifice your high speed internet (we have fiber!) and at a considerable cost savings compared to using a VPN, is a DNS proxy service. You will have to change a few settings on it and in minutes you will have unfettered Video streaming goodness. At around $5 a month or about $60a year, I use unblock-us.com. They have great customer service and a great setup guide for the non-tech savvy.
I hope this is helpful, and if you have any questions please leave a comment below.
