So This year's typhoon season here in Okinawa started with a bang. "Typhoon #8" or Neoguri, the worst typhoon seen in Japan fin 15 years hit Okinawa yesterday July 8th. Schools were closed, busses stopped running except this one.
Okinawa was national news again in Japan. Miyako jima to the south of us was in the direct line of site for the Typhoon. We saw people nailing plywood to windows and securing trees with twine. The English NHK news said the winds were going at 110 mph and enough to make a magazine a glass penetrating artillery.
Kelly and I stayed indoors and watched as Neoguri whip around our plants. Fun fact they name each typhoon ahead of time and Neoguri means Raccon Dog in Korean, the Japanese have also have a name for raccoon dogs, Tanuki. Many area's in Okinawa were without power for days, most of kids at Kelly's school reported that they didn't have power. School was canceled the day after because of flooding and lack of power in many areas, but they didn't cancel it soon enough to send some kids back.
When Neoguri hit mainland Japan there was a landslide that took the life of 12 year old kid. Lots of areas experienced flooding, it rained about a foot of rain in one day both here in Okinawa in Mainland Japan.
